Slovenia Culture

Slovenia is as old as the hills and yet as new as a few decades ago. Slovenia as a ‘people’ can trace its origins back at least a millennium and a half. But Slovenia as a nation-state is a much more recent entity; not until June 1991 did Slovenia arrive as an independent republic. It`s area is 20.273 km2 and has over 2 million populations in 2019. Slovenia is a multi-religious country and include 61% Christian (58% Catholic, 2% Orthodox, 1% Protestant, 3% Muslim, 36% with no confirmed faith. The secret is out that Slovenia is a beautiful country and tourism is growing rapidly. The number of tourist arrivals in 2017 reached 4.7 million, a 13% increase from the previous year.Slovenes are also undergoing a revived interest in their own culinary heritage. Over the past decade Slovenia has succeeded in gaining protected status within the EU for several regional and national dishes, including in 2015 for the Carniolan sausage (Kranjska klobasa). The trend has been underpinned by the Slovenian Tourist Board, which has launched a campaign to identify and support uniquely Slovenian dishes as part of the country’s bid to win designation as a European Gastronomic Region in 2021.
